The Colosseum

The Colosseum is an iconic piece of architecture unparalleled throughout the history of Rome. The monument takes you to another timeline as it speaks of the glorious past and a history that will leave you almost shocked at what once was “entertaining” to the elites of Rome.

The Colosseum in Rome is an attraction magnet in Italy that attracts nearly 6 million tourists every year. Every year on the day of the Good Friday, thousands of people join the “Way of Cross” procession that starts around the Colosseum. The people move along with the pope who carries a torch to guide the way.

In its 450 years of serving roman elite society, the Colosseum was a stage for classical drama, sporting events, executions, hunts, and wild animal fights. There were approx. 50,000 – 80,000 common people who watched the shows with the elite. As time went on, the fall of the Roman Empire put a stop to entertainment by the 6th century.

By the 1900s, many factors like neglect, vandalism, weather and natural disasters damaged almost two-thirds of the original building. The Roman era ornamentation such as the marble seats and decorations were also long lost. With time, many restoration efforts started to conserve it and have continued since.
